The analyst position is pretty much a back room role. So while he may help analyze which recruits to go after (as if this really matters to Alabama), whatever personal touch he possesses doesn't do Alabama any good.
Are all schools doing this? That is, are all schools hiring good people (people whose names we might recognize) to take some of the load off of the actual coaching staff? I can see how having a DC talk to Charlie Strong would make for a much better defensive approach to a particular game than just having the DC do the analysis.
Originally, the intention was to create positions to serve as sort of internships for up and coming coaches early in their careers, not for fired head coaches living off their old contracts. And naturally, the big monied schools found another way to give them even more advantages.
Basically these folks are assistants to the coaches and they cannot coach players during practice or games. Alabama seems to have cornered the market on hiring higher profile guys while they are collecting checks from their former employers. I think these guys learning more from what Saban /Alabama does than the other way around.

The “analysts” can’t still for example pay attention to the recruits high school basketball game, note that the recruit scored 12 points, had 8 rebounds, and made 2 key free throws in overtime. Then draft a text message or e-mail for one of the “coaches” to send
Or the “analyst” can watch practice tape, and write up analysis for the “coach” to discuss.
Or the “analyst” can have some interaction in off-field meetings reviewing tape.
As an analyst, Bob Elliot was responsible for evaluating all of the various means of defending Navy’s options, and coming up with a plan for ND. Everything from a scheme to working with the Graduate Assistants to set up a special scout team for it. They can play an important role behind the scenes.
As a matter of fact, Pitt got called on how they were mis-using their analysts as part of the NCAA charges against them.
