I don’t see how this will work. As they say it’s like Whack A Mole. For football with both

college and the NFL, panic driven by the MSM will force school presidents and NFL owners to shut down. On top of that the underlying, you don’t tell me what to do, will wreck havoc on scheduling. I just don’t see a season based on our panic culture.

Assuming players can mantian safety, play without attendance

It's a tad easier to socially distance playing golf.

many won't. I think that goes a long way toward explaining Father Jenkins' aggressive posture on re-opening. ND would survive, but it would take a massive hit.

Thread Level: 3

True. An online education is not worth $75k. ND has to re-open.

I assume that ND is much better positioned to survive, than, say, University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne. But, I think all private schools have to reopen or risk dying. They don't have the bottomless resources that state schools have.

But, the University claims that most of it is restricted to athletics, arts, or other specific categories and thus not available to students.

I find that difficult to accept. I think charging $73,000 per year (the projected cost for 2020-2021, including room & board) is a serious problem. I've written before, the Ivies have a model where basically nobody pays the "rack rate," but instead the cost is tailored to individual students and their financial situations; Harvard et al. think it is inappropriate for students to be saddled with crippling student loans. This is the model ND should adopt.

Notre Dame says it uses this model. They meet your need. But, THEY determine your need.

Imagine if you bought a car that way. The dealer says, come on in! Everyone deserves a car. We will meet all your need. Here, fill out these forms, and tell us all about your financial situation, and we will meet all of your need, so you can have a car. First, cars would cost $400,000 suddenly. Second, the dealer determines your need. Isn't that backwards? He doesn't price his car based on what the car is worth, what the market will bear. He prices it for you based on what HE thinks you should pay...a number which has zero to do with what you think you should pay.

Doctors are now coming out and saying that it would be best for young people to get back to school and start getting back to some normalcy or else the set back will be significant.

Key will be how well Florida and Texas do in terms of deaths and ICU hospitalizations. If in the next couple weeks they stay steady then the general public, even those that are eating the most fear porn, will start to turn.

Country in Europe has gained control. We have a selfish, me first culture. Other countries rallied to the call of sacrifice for the greater good. We protested wearing a mask on our face. As a result, the sacrifices we made were wasted. It is a sad state of affairs. Hopefully we respond with a unified purpose to defeat this virus.

being studied. (Nature.com did a nice article about this process. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-01738-2) There are educated guesses hovering around .5 to 1 percent about the IFR, but thankfully it should continue to decrease as doctors and scientists learn more about how to treat it. But keeping the IFR low is dependent on having enough beds and medical staff to treat the seriously ill. In two weeks, the hospital my wife works at, Desert Regional Medical Center, has 99% capacity of ICU beds as of yesterday. (This article depicts the situation in Riverside County where my wife's hospital is located.
https://nbcpalmsprings.com/2020/06/29/shortage-of-icu-beds-reported-in-riverside-county/

They can still add more ICU beds by designating other portions of the hospital as Covid areas. But there isn't enough staff to watch all the beds.

There is one thing for certain. If seriously ill individuals are not able to be admitted for treatment and there are insufficient medical personal to administer said treatment, the IFR will increase.

I may not change your mind about the virus, but what my wife is experiencing is happening all over the country. Which takes us back to why Europe has been able to open back up and we have not. We have a selfish culture that is more concerned about the individual than the well being of our neighbor.

I wish you the best WestCoastIrish. We don't always agree, but I respect you. I hope everyone on this board avoids this virus and stays healthy. We shall see if people are willing to start taking small steps, like wearing a mask to ensure that happens.

Take some time to read the articles. I put them in there because I summarized parts. It gives you a chance to independently read the same articles.
