Combination of Kelly..Rees..and lack of chip long...should of hired moorehead ..he's been lighting it up
complaining about about never hearing from him.
The competitive advantage of Notre Dame is largely driven by the ability to get recruits on campus. Without that working for us we are in trouble and thats our situation currently. How can we sell the advantage of ND to four and five star kids when we are asking them to typically relocate many miles from home during the virus situation, there are simply too many other good options closer to where they reside.. Mama currently has little interest in having their kid be located this far from home, as indicated by the number of regular students that are opting to take a year off.
Kelly and his staff are not perfect but I personally think its unfair to judge them based on recent experience. I am overall impressed with the team of coaches (from a recruiting standpoint) he has put together but this is not the year to try and judge them. What started as a great recruiting year has turned into somewhat of a disappointment recently and I for one think they are lucky if they can keep the existing committments. I am still optimistic we can find a gem or two this year but its an uphill battle until travel is opened up.
The one advantage I see us as having picked up recently is the likely closure of West Coast schools, and particularly Stanford which has taken several kids in recent years that would have gone to ND, but with the improved football situation for the Cardinal recently this has made them touch competition for the strong academic student athlete that the Irish have had to focus on. For this type of recruit it is often Stanford versus ND as those are the better options in the country for those with a strong academic focus. Given the number of transfers from Stanford after last season year and their lack of success with recruiting this year they appear to be in decline and that should help us in a head to head battle.
As for Mack Brown, I have spent some time with him and he is an outstanding recruiter and coach and he has been energized to prove the Texas folks were wrong to let him go, which they were. He has lots of local talent that typically went out of state and he has now closed the borders successfully. His lack of recruits this year out of state helps support my opinion, recruits, for now, want to stay close to home.

Remember when the 2021 class was ranked #1? It's now hurtling towards the 20's.
In a decade at ND, how many times has he signed a top 5 class? Top 10?
2013 was a top 5 class

He needs to do that every year to compete for national titles.
It is hard to see how he can be such a deadbeat, but be in the top ten over a span of several years at producing elite talent.

identifying, recruiting and landing raw kids that turn into monsters........on defense. Which BK has little to nothing to do with.
BK spends the vast majority of his time with the offense. How many of those players have "overachieved"? The vast majority of top O players, under BK, have under achieved and struggled until their senior year. That goes specifically for WR and OL. QB's have consistently gotten worse the more they played for BK.
Kelly is an average recruiter at best. Look at the recruiting rankings during his tenure. Average. Notre-Dame needs elite recruiters and the rest will take care of itself.

an average recruiter. What I mean by this is, he can recognize talent which a lot of recruiters can't do, they're just good at double speak in the homes.
Kelly has found underrated talent and given them a place at ND.
Unfortunately it's what he does with big time talent.
What is painfully obvious is, he doesn't know what to do with the talent when they don't shine immediately. He's tethered to, if you're great in practice
and meet a certain metric, you're the one who should be on the field at game time. Meanwhile the bigger talent with a higher ceiling is left with little
to do and he appears never to go back and work or give opportunities to that still developing, albeit at a slower pace, talent, often times (all the time)
working on what is good in their talent trying to change it to something else instead of nurturing what's available. - eg PJ.
I watched the Mets take John Olerud a batter who was flirting with a .400 batting avg. knock it down to a less than.300 avg trying to correct his swing. That is
Kelly in a nutshell when it comes to developing good talent that moves along a little slower than expected.
One is from VA Beach, a 3.5 hr drive, the other is from TN.
Give him credit but he's got more fertile ground in his backyard.
and onto recruits floors. The guy knows how to get $$$ into recruits hands, always has.
Kelly is coasting until he retires and we all know it. He isn't going to start getting good at landing these players and why should he? In his mind his legacy is already secure. It might very well be the poorest staff in that regard he's ever had here and we might not even be top 20 when it's all over. Just unacceptable to be that fucking awful at it.

ok I exaggerate a bit but you are right. Long, the best recruiter is gone and it seems, except for Mickens possibly, that Kelly and the staff do not have what it takes to recruit like Brown. It is disturbing, particularly considering what Kelly said about having a top 5 class.
