have we seen in 11 years that would drive any reasonable person to believe this team is National Champion caliper? I heard it from Dungy in the first half. He was stunned the team played so poorly.

You are perfect for them.
Thank you.

Who in the HELL do you think they can bring in! You think Urban is knocking on the door? If Kelly Fly`s, I`d bet they fail bringing in their top targets, and then they go into scramble/panic mode and bring in someone like Fatboy, Charlie Strong, or even Ty! He may not have gotten ND to that championship plane; but at least he`s been close. The one standout thing about BK, is that he`s been wiling to change; sometimes on the fly, but in most cases for the better of the team. Which is what those aforementioned numnuts all failed to do. Like him or NOT, BK is still the best guy for that job.
You're right.
We suck & are irrelevant & are lucky to have Brian Kelly.
Someone who's been a CFB coach for close to 30 years (10 of those years at ND)
A coach who in those 30 years has:
No National Championships
No Heisman trophy winners
No FBS playoff wins
Recruiting classes that consistently rank in the #12-18 range. Says he wants to change that, but he signs EVERY 3* "diamond in the rough" recruit he can.
Has beaten exactly ONE team that finished in the top 5 in the final polls (MSU 2013) in TEN years at ND
Hires his buddies who are EXTRAORDINARILY under-qualified (BVG, Quinn, Rees) His AD has to force his hand into firing BVG after a humiliating 38-35 loss to Duke, 2016.
All of his QBs at ND have gotten progressively worse the longer they play for him (Golson, Wimbush, Book)
He bitched about the field, they gave him his desired field turf
He complained about crowd noise/support, they gave him his giant TV
He complained about inadequate training facilities (despite already having the Gug), they built him a million dollar, state of the art facility
* I won't even get into TJ Jones, David Grimes, vacated wins or Declan Sullivan.
How lucky us ND faithful are to have an elite coach like Brian Kelly for another awe inspiring 5 seasons!
Now run along & enjoy your Kool Aid.
a realistic position to hold. But if you owned a company that once dominated an industry and you hired a new CEO to get back to the top. But after 11 years while he made significant improvements but he failed in key areas to get to the top. Would you extend his contract? Maybe if you couldn’t find a better CEO that wanted and could do the job.

just might be the only one currently interested in the position. (Strike currently)
Sheeeeesh. They looked sloppy but so did pretty much everyone yesterday. Not even Clemson was in mid-season form.
Book has a ceiling and he didn't look great yesterday which is concerning but he was also missing his top two weapons - Kevin Austin and Braden Lenzy. This offense will look MUCH different with a legit #1 in Austin and Lenzy's speed lined up all over the field.
Add in the incoming class of Tyler Buchner and a wide receiving corps potentially of Deion Colzie, Lorenzo Styles, and Jayden Thomas and it's easy for me to see why Notre Dame might want to let that play out.
There is also the 19 straight home wins as of yesterday too. Notre Dame is now 34-6 in their last 40 games.
contract. Realistically does Kelly win a championship in the next five years? Based on the last 11 years I just don’t see it.
Recruiting is going very well right now - ND probably lands around 7 or 8 this year. Had they had on-campus visits, top 5 was very possible. Without getting the likes of Rucci, Shipley, etc back on campus or on for the first time though, that ship sailed. Even still, Notre Dame's wide receiving room is about to be loaded. So it really comes down to Buchner. If he is the goods, then ND has a shot at a title with this extension. If he isn't, ND won't win one under Kelly but will have a bunch more 10+ win seasons. It shouldn't have taken 10 years for Kelly to land and develop an elite QB, but Buchner might finally be that QB. If he is, we'll have a shot at a natty.
There isn't someone out there right now that would be a no-brainer for Notre Dame either. There are a few young coaches coming up that look like they could be in the next generation of great coaches, but none ready enough to step in at a place like Notre Dame and take the program to the next level. In a few years Brohm, Fleck, etc will have larger bodies of work.
Don’t get me wrong Book is very solid but he won’t start on Sundays. We appear to have the personnel to play with almost anyone but lack the elite QB.
Agree they started rusty but thought they looked pretty good in second half. That level of play won’t cut it against Clemson but they really don’t have much else on schedule except North Carolina. FSU sucks.
a team to the championship just like Watson did also. Everyone including Book has to perform above their talent level to win the championship. I think we have a chance but we are probably in the eight to eleven range. As for yesterday, offenses do often struggle early in the year and it is cliche to say the improvement from week 1 to week 2 will tell the story, but hopefully it is true for us. I thought Book's major problem besides not locating the wide open receiver that would have been a touchdown was zipping it too hard on the short passes. Montana never had a strong arm but man could he throw a catchable ball. That screen pass Book missed to Williams was silly bad. Clean it up, he was incredibly accurate his sophomore year, we need more of that.
What is worrisome is next year say Bucnher is the real deal and starts. He'd be starting behind a line featuring at least 3 new starters with Hainsey, Eichenberg, and Kraemer out of eligibility. I doubt Banks has a good enough season to leave early but if the Big 10 and Pac 12 never play this year, we could see a lot of players leave early who wouldn't have normally.
We also need to get healthy at WR. Even Trevor Lawerence would have struggled w/o Lenzy and Austin out there yesterday.
live up to the hype. You have written about them. And based on their assets and list of schools recruiting them the next one was a sure winner. What happened? They sat on the bench for one or two years learning the system and when they finally started they failed to develop.
So while I hope the new recruit is the real thing at QB how many of The ND QB’s ended up transferring, after losing their starting job? The next savior never shows up and fails to develop. It’s always the next recruit.
As you said 11 years should be enough time to have developed at least one great QB. Which is the most important position in college football. Let’s hope this is the guy.

Kelly was better than his predecessors and he advanced the program.
His ceiling is a known.
He should not be allowed to amass more wins than Rockne.
I will give it a rest.
Hope for the best for the team always.
