Anyone old enough to remember the show "Sportswriters on TV" it aired out of Chicago on WGN

It predated the radio and tv sports talk shows and was a room full of cigar smoke and banter. Local sports guys Bill Jauss, Bill Gleason, Ben Bentley and the young guy Rick Telander from SI. They talked everything from boxing to horse racing and of course the Irish.

That group, oddly enough, would have been down with the kneelers. Especially Jaust and Telander.

Mike Lupica was an idiot and an ass. A BC grad by the way. He was wrong about everything.

There's a bunch on YouTube. Recall seeing this one where they discussed Kurt Cobain's suicide...

Sure, but rather than predating, it was actually a video adaptation of a radio talk show on WGN

It was at it's zenith in the mid 80s with those great Bears teams. Except for Rick Telander, I wasn't a big fan of any one of the regulars, but the chemistry between them made the show work. Especially with the eccentric fight promotor, Ben Bentley as the moderator.

I used to take the wife for an afternoon Sunday drive and would have the 'Sports Writers' on WGN radio. It was started by Chicago Sports Columnist Bill Gleason in the late 1970s. His fellow panelists were Ben Bentley, Bill Jauss and Rick Telander. The show then migrated to television in the mid-1980s. It was unique for its time and was clearly the forerunner of sports talk radio.

That's right, I forgot it was a talk show filmed for TV. I liked it because you always got ND talk.
