beginning but from what I heard that initial injury really screwed him up. He did look great his first game and actually brought us back in the second game but the same length field goal Michigan made in 1994, they missed in 1988. Also if Todd Collins doesn't make a lucky pass while he was being sacked or Becton not get fumbleitis we win that game. Also he never had a great receiver once we could not get Randy Moss. Derek Mayes had great hands but not fast.
and yes, still remember that near sack , and eventual FG sailing thru the uprights..Is that the game a potential game winning ND TD catch was ruled out of bounds, receiver was straddling the line, was it Joel Williams?...His career was sure a disappointment after that, BUT I agree he was underrated, and the expectations led to that
first game and replays and Sports Illustrated clearly showed it was a legal catch. John Carney missed a very makeable field goal at the end of that game that would have won it also. I also remember a drop by Joel Williams that first year that cost us an upset win against Number 1 to be Penn State. I also remember a kickoff return by Tim Brown against LSU I believe being called back or was it the same game against Penn State, not sure on that one.
As far as the missed TD catch, I think you are thinking of Michigan in 1986? Joel Williams' catch at the back of end zone was ruled out when replay showed he was probably in bounds
the scene with that 42 point outburst vs NW Thanks for the Williams clarification I knew I was there for that one too, a 24-23 heartbreaker in Lou's first yr..

94 was his first year playing as a redshift Freshman and he looked pretty good despite the team sucking.
In 95 (as redshirt Soph) the team was very good and he was growing into something special... the future looked very bright for him, then he broke his upper arm towards end of season and he was never the same after that... in 96 & 97 he just didn't look like the same player.
and I thought we would beat Ohio State in our stadium. This was after we beat Texas at their place in a comeback win. The problem was Emmitt Mosely had a severe case of the dropsies on a perfectly thrown pass from Powlus early in the game that would have been big, and Autry Denson had a punt return for a TD called back. We could have won that game. We later lost to Air Force in overtime after trouncing a supposedly very good Washington team two weeks earlier. It was also the year that Randy Moss should have been on our team. Holtz had said he was the greatest offensive player he ever saw when he was recruiting him.
Even in 1995 we had Ohio State on the ropes and Emmit dropped a punt return which turned into a short TD drive for them after we had stopped OSU on a three and out. We had scored the previous drive and their defense was dead tired. If Mosely just fair catches the ball we had momentum and they were dead tired and gasping for air. If we drive it again and we were moving the ball well, they would have quit even with their more talented team that year. I remember Bob Griese saying this was not Holtz's best Notre Dame team playing against Ohio State's best team and we had them on the ropes until the Emmitt Mosely muff. Kinder was especially unstoppable and Grasmanis was driving them nuts on defense. They actually scored a TD late in the first half or I think we would have had a 17-7 lead at the half at their place. Holtz was ten times the coach as Cooper was and was making him look bad. They had a ton of talent that year with Eddie George and a speedy receiver whose name eludes me but he played for the Jets and Parcells called him a "she" one time because he was injured a lot, but later Parcells pointed to a sign in the Meadowlands that said "she can play" and they had a great laugh over it because he had become a big play receiver in the pros. I diverse but you could see that was a game Holtz would have won by simply outcoaching the dimwitted Cooper.
In fact, statistically, he had his best year in 1996 after he came back from the broken arm. From the eye test though, I don't think he ever really improved. You say it was the arm injury. I can't say your opinion is right or wrong. My opinion is he was about the same. He had a better receiver to throw to in 94 and 95. That helped him look better.
Especially with his Dad, he would have his tuition covered.

I hope the kid does well. But it is odd given the scholly logic. Good observation by you.
The staff might know they are only getting 0-1 further commits in this class, and made this call based on perceived "room." I hope that isn't the case. There are at least three recruits ND hasn't signed that I'd love to see in this class.

Talk about saddling someone with something they didn't ask for.
