Of the ones I actually saw, probably the Cheerios Bowl.
Underrated as an upset. We had lost to Tennessee at home after blowing a huge lead, gotten blown out by Penn State, and then squeaked by Hawaii by 6 points. The defense was a disaster, and morale was in the toilet. A lot of experts felt like we would get destroyed by Spurrier's Gators.
The upset win planted the seeds for a really strong turnaround through the next 2 seasons.
1998 over Michigan was surprising, but you can't label it "great" given what happened a week later, and the underachieving season in general.
I had forgotten about that Hawaii game
I was lucky enough to attend that Sugar Bowl game. Bettis ran over UF in a similar to Eddie Lacy in the BCS game. ND fans were outnumbered by Fla fans by about 10-1 or so it seemed. Bourbon street was practically deserted afterwards and my flight home the next day was awful. All worth it.

Not the greatest, but the first: I watched ND with Lattner, Heap,
Guglielmi, Warden, beat Okla and Billy Vessels. First Nationally televised collegiate foot ball game. Irish fan forever
Since very few remember that one and I saw a replay of that game and it was a boring 7 to 0
win, if we win this week it will be the greatest upset ever. We have a better chance at this one than we did in that one apparently. The only disadvantage is that teams score so much more because the rules favor the offense. I am psyched and it is tied right now.

I just feel it odd that I don’t recall any epic ND upsets.
I guess we don’t really live up to the phrase “What though the odds be great or small.”
