coordinating a unit that paced college football in scoring, yielding only 13 points per game. They fired Bob Diaco, ring a bell?
Elston and his family apparently love the South Bend area and are not anxious to pick up and move. He appears to give more weight to family than his career advancement. Since he is making good money and is happy at ND, why make a move. I could see him finishing his coaching career at Notre Dame, and then being given a job in the Athletic Department if Kelly's replacement does not retain him as a coach - again like Kelly, Boulac and Yonto.

... or be promoted ...
Freeman is likely a short-timer and will likely get HC calls next year and maybe take one the following year

as a candidate to take over the program when Kelly goes. He's only 46 and understands the defense and, more importantly, the system that has produced (recruited and developed) the talent we've had. He has been here with Kelly through all the good and bad times and he knows what works here and how things have to work here. He is the one Kelly says is clearly the most ready to HC a major program. If he can hire the very best DC and very best OC he possibly can and let them do their jobs and just make sure the program runs the way it should, he could be good.
I'd rather not spend another 20 years being terrible while some new coach tries to reinvent the wheel after this next coaching change (whenever that happens).
