PSA: 90+ yard drives are optically bad. They ARE NOT THE PROBLEM at ND. THE OFFENSE IS THE PROBLEM.

Just stop, oldirirish. Giving up back breaking 4th quarter TDs is a problem, a very big problem.

The offense is the problem, but giving up 2 95 yard drives in the 4th when the game is on the
line 2 weeks in a row is more than an optical problem. None the less giving up 19 and 21 points is normally considered doing your job in today’s CFB. I agree with you there. The O is by far the main issue and our D should keep us in games.

Luv ya old, but take off the blinders...we don't have ONE problem, we have many
And the defensive play, considering the wealth of experience and talent we have on that side of the ball, has been putrid compared to expectations. This was expected to be one of the best defenses in the nation, they have vastly underperformed. Does this mean they are terrible? No, but to pretend there isn't a problem on that side is just short sighted.
Yes, the offense (most specifically the OL) is a MAJOR problem, but they also entered the season (other than the OL) as a major question mark.
As bad as the offense has been, they aren't underperforming by as large a margin as the D vs expectations.
In my eyes if I was forced to center in on just two things, it would be this...our OL and DL have both played very soft. This leads me to question either motivation or strength and conditioning.
Something in that area {motivation or strength and conditioning} is missing.

No blinders. Strictly what would it take to be 2 and 0. We wouldn't have needed to score even 30.
The focus of this board is the easy surface level stuff and not the root problem. Fix the root and solve many of the other problems with ease.

But you don't know that, our D has shown against 3 teams in a row (since Freeman took over)
They have no late game answer, thus no lead is safe with the way they have played. What did we score vs oSu? The defense IS a problem, it's shown that in 2nd halves opposing offenses have free reign to do whatever they like. No lead is safe with them.

The offense is 80% of the problem
It rarely scores ! The defense has forced a lot of punts. We never do anything on offense to give the defense hope,.

I agree the offense is the bigger problem. The defense is not good however. You described it as...
TakethetrainKnute 35845 posts"phenomenal" below...which is flat out looney...

Level 2
If you told me. Your offense only needs to score about 24pts to win. I'd say, that's phenominal. I
can do that EASILY.

And thanks for proving my point...
TakethetrainKnute 35845 postsYou don't understand the meaning of the word "phenomenal".
Have already said that the offense is the chief problem and that a poor offense puts the defense on the field for too long and often without the time to rest.
That said, this defense ranks poorly in too many categories to come close to being called phenomenal. Didn't fault it too much for the long drive by tOSU in the 4th. Marshall at home is a different story...

But you can't say that, because if the O scored 24
we've seen ZERO evidence the D would protect that lead in the 4th.
They have literally shown that the opposing offense can do whatever they want late in the game...with that type of D play we would need a great high scoring offense to assure ourselves of winning most games.

I can under the belief that if the O could consistently score 24-31. The D would not be gassed in
the 4th.
Yes, it is an assumption. A hypothesis. One I'd like to see proven or disproven. Let's assume, I'm wrong and you're right. Given we've now solved the O we can see what parts of the D are wrong. At that point, we'd have at least two units roughly pulling their weight. So the team would be in much better position. If that were the case we wouldn't be 0-3 in the Freeman era, because we have one side of the ball not pulling their weight at all period.
You can't win with one unit pulling it's weight.
Yes, the D isn't great but it's pulling its weight. I don't know when this article was written but it says (skimmed) the most common score is 55pts. 55/2 = 27.5
Our defense is only giving up 20 this year. or 72% of expected.
Our offense isn't even close averaging 15.5 or only 56% of expected. That's terrible. A major problem which likely leads to a D giving up more points for being gased.
No I do not think our D is great. I think our O is THE MAJOR problem that has to be fixed now and first.
