This according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. Golden's name is one of a few named as possible candidate for the Tech job.

Paul Johnson left the place with a roster full of triple option players. There weren't any legitimate receivers, or quarterbacks, for that matter.

In the few years that Collins recruited there, he (Collins) tried his best to recruit athletes who could play in a spread offense, but didn't exactly have impact players who could contribute right away.

As a result, it's not surprising that Georgia Tech was a terrible team.

Right now, there are a handful of 4 star players, but most of the roster are middle of the road players. Arguably, their best player, Jahmyr Gibbs, fled the program for the Crimson Tide.

If Al Golden is as shrewd as I think he is, I believe he'll wait for a better opportunity.

It's in Atlanta, the capital of the south. With the portal, you can reshuffle the roster quickly.

It's certainly better than Nebraska, for example.

Given they are dumping both the coach and the AD (who may have been dumped because he wouldn't dump the football coach), indicates they may be wanting more than what they are getting for their money which is perhaps a good sign. On the other hand, Nebraska ponied up big bucks to get Frost who could have gone anywhere.

It is at best a 2nd tier program in the ACC which isn't saying much given the ACC. With no division titles to chase, they would have to be lucky to get into a New Year's day bowl.

1) GT actually has academic standards which means they won't take any Tom, Dick or Harry. Perhaps not as limiting as ND or Stanford but there are standards.
2) Being in the heart of the south means they compete with virtually every other Power 5 School that recruits the area. They are unlikely to win many of those battles.
3) The portal is a two-way street for schools like GT. Getting guys in didn't help the former coach very much, did it? At the same time, he lost a number of solid players (i.e., RB who went to Alabama) to the portal.

He could have had a head coaching job instead of coming to ND.

He's not in any rush.

I think he'll be a quick go, but one more year would be good.

I understand wanting to be a head coach due to the money. But coordinating seems more interesting

After all, a coordinator is the actual chess player. It seems the head coach is just the, for lack of a better word, the chief referee.
