Gerry Faust was the head coach for my first three years at ND. Any number of students in that era have anecdotal stories of very positive interactions with him. He was universally generous and he treated us students extremely well. His love for Notre Dame was genuine and he showed it in so many ways.

He did have some big wins - most notably the win @ #1 Pitt, but also a win @ #7 LSU, He was also 1-4 against Air Force.

RIP Gerry. You were a good man.

Even though he wasn't a good head coach at all, he still exemplified what true loyalty to the Golden Dome is, and he helped set the foundation for Lou's success.

Rest in peace, Coach Faust.

Great man I loved his win over Pitt in 1982. His team actually pushed Penn State all over

the field that year also but managed to lose. One Blackledge pass to running back Kurt Warner beat us but I taped that game and watched it over and over and we should have beaten the bullshit "national champ" that year. I dislike Penn State almost as much as NEPA Irish and when I remember those early games we should have beaten them in 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1987. Oh yeah and 1990. Those losses were sickening.

He gave me a ride in the freezing cold &wind in AM of Jan 1983- a simple act of kindness.

I was walking behind the ACC (called Joyce now), coming back from an early AM Stanley Kaplan course for the MCAT which was held in a building beyond where the Linebacker Lounge building is located south of campus. I was heading back to Grace Hall with a heavy backpack in the driving, freezing wind.
A car pulls up next to me behind The ACC and the window came down….”Would you like a ride?”
I was surprised to see that it was Jerry Faust, and I said “Sure! Thank you!”.

He asked me about where I was from, what was my major, was I working hard and how important that was to my future. He asked me about my family.

Would other big time coaches done that for a student? Would I? (I hope so).

A good man.
