Okay, so the last statement may be a stretch, but if we're honest, here are the 12 best teams (in no particular order):
Oregon
Ohio State
Indiana
Penn State
Georgia
Tennessee
Texas
Mississippi
Alabama
Miami
Notre Dame
SMU
Even if ND were to lose at USC, does that really mean they're not one of the best 12? To my mind, no, but I realize how these things work. Barring some sort of weird happenings, that would knock ND out of the playoff...maybe.

In the 2024-25 season, 12 teams will qualify for the College Football Playoff. The top five conference champions will earn automatic bids, thereby securing the top five seeds. The remaining seven highest-ranked teams will complete the 12-team field.
All that team is guaranteed is a spot in the playoffs. After the top 4 conference winners, the rest of field will be seeded as appropriate.
The top 4 conference champions are seeded 1-4. The 5th highest is in the playoff, but seeded in the remaining order. If ranked outside the top12, they would automatically be ranked 12th. Therefore, being ranked in top 12 of CFP does not guarantee a spot in playoff.
