Bowden is not that big a deal, but with Golden we’ll see how much he’s developed

Although I have my concerns with Denbrock, Freeman was surrounded by two first rate coordinators. So, will be interesting to see how Marcus does with these decisions and going forward.

Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to match an offer. It is a very bad idea to do it twice

Having been involved in employee compensation for most of my work life, I been in these type of situations numerous times. I can't think of any time where a valuable employee was given a counter offer more than once.

I don't fault Bowen for choosing a different place to work while tripling his salary (although in moving to LA he isn't really tripling his "spendable" income.) Good for him. And while I'm sure he did a good job, he isn't irreplaceable (I'm more worried about losing Mickens) by any means.

He isn't a player development person. He's like a headhunter who keeps track of, talks to, and "recruits" new employees. USC and Michigan went after him because he is experienced forerunner in what he does and it is easier to grab one of these folks from a competitor than it is to get a new one. I'm sure Freeman will find another guy who will do just a good a job.

Any hints as to who you feel the candidates are?

Like North Carolina choosing Belichick and Stanford hiring Andrew Luck, Universities will increasingly look towards the NFL to find GMs, given the professionalization of the college game. Yea, he's the HC, but will also play a CEO/GM role, given his experience. (I could be wrong)

Maybe, but the dynamics of NIL and the portal are very different than the NFL

The roster management component is similar, but NIL and the portal is a whole different beast. I'd rather Notre Dame get someone who won't need a crash course on the college game.
