Fuck.

Kind of reminds me of when Rocket Ismail played for Notre Dame

Leave it at 12. Eliminate the auto byes. The season is long enough as it is.

Most seasons, there will be 4 teams from these conferences in the Top 16.

This year, with only 12 teams, there were 4 Big Ten teams and 3 S.E.C. teams. Had there been a field of 16 in the playoffs, we would have had 5 or 6 S.E.C. teams (adding in Ole Miss and Alabama, and possibly South Carolina). Miami probably would have been the 16th team.

I don't like the auto-bid guarantee they want, but it will probably shake out that way most seasons, anyway.

This is just dumb and is 100% anti-definition of a playoff. Money hungry leagues.

4 auto bids each is too much..3 each plus 2 each for ACC/B12 is more than fair..

leaves 5 at large so there's room for them to get a 4th or even 5th in of they're good enough.

4 locked in teams no matter how good/average/poor they are that year is excessive.

Why wouldn't you just take the top 16-seeded teams? Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered.

Seriously. Do away with the conference championship nonsense. Take the top 16 seeded teams. Start play before XMAS. Give home field advantage in first round. Use the major bowl games for the second round.

This doesn't need to be that difficult.

The remaining schools should peel off, take the NCAA with them, and start a competing league.

Why not? Anything to cheapen the regular season. That is the trend for College FB.

This year that would have added Alabama - no big deal

But you can't only look at this year, you have to look at the whole picture..consider this

•in the 12 team 2024 format, Notre Dame had the opportunity of 7 spots as only 5 spots were guaranteed to someone other than Notre Dame (4+1 Conf Champs)
•under the SEC/B1G proposed guaranteed spots format, even if going to 16 teams (added 4 spots), it only leaves Notre Dame with the opportunity of 3 spots (reduced our opportunity by 4 spots while increasing opportunity for all others by 4)
•under this same proposed format, but with only 14 teams, Notre Dame only has the opportunity for 1 of the 14 spots..that's right, 13 of the 14 spots would be "guaranteed" to teams other than Notre Dame.

16 is definitely most ideal for Notre Dame (short of joining a conference).

As I noted above, I don't like 4 auto-bids for each, because it dismisses the cyclical nature of the history of this sport. The Big 12 and A.C.C. have both had seasons/eras in which their Top 4 was as good or better than at least 1 of the Big Ten or the S.E.C.

That said, at 16 teams even with this entitlement situation those conferences want, if we aren't clearly one of the best 3 teams after 4 from the Big 10, 4 from the S.E.C., 2 from the A.C.C., 2 from the Big 12, and some Group of 5 add-in have been slotted, we aren't really a playoff team. I do agree with you that the window is tight at 14, but you might make the same argument here.....if the 5th-place Big 10/S.E.C. team or 3rd-place A.C.C./Big 12 team is even arguably a better choice than Notre Dame, I don't know that we're a playoff-quality team.

I think in most cases you would be right, but my concern is that this relies on the ranking of the playoff committee

Who imo showed they can't be trusted to do the "right thing" at the "right time" when both Texas and Penn State took their 2nd L and they dropped us in their rankings just to make room for them to drop from their loss, without falling below us...while simultaneously BOTH the AP and Coaches Polls moved us up to #3.

To me this opens the possibility of say, LSU is #5 in the SEC at 7-5 vs a tough schedule and ranked #14 ahead of a 9-3 ND at #15..they get in and we get left out.

I fully get the 'are we playoff worthy at 9-3?' but what if the 5th SEC or B1G team that bumps us is even less worthy.

I'm not a fan of any guaranteed spots other than Conference Champions, but I could at least push the I believe button on 3+3+2+2+1 for guaranteed spots..4+4 is just too far.

Imagine if it went 4+3+2+1+1, but the 4, 3, and 2 weren't locked into specific conferences by name but instead went in order to the 3 P4 conferences with highest combined win % in that regular season..BOOM!

I'm the lone voice saying 12 is too much as it is. Unless we enjoy first round wipe outs.
