Thank you, from a BYU fan

I've been a BYU football fan since I could talk. I have had season tickets for generations at BYU games and rarely have missed a home game in 35ish years. Occasionally, I had attended BYU away games as well. In those games it always felt like our group was in our own bubble, separated from fans from whatever school we were watching. That all changed for me in 2012 attending the BYU game at South Bend.

Your fanbase was incredible. I attended the midnight drum event and then the game day walk. Even though I was decked out in Cougar blue, I had well over a hundred people thank me for coming to visit South Bend. You had knowledgeable fans who knew our players names and would strike up friendly conversation. The ushers in the stadium went out of their way to ask how my visit had been and whether they could help support my experience.

Y'all changed me. 1. Since that day, I've done everything I can to be more courteous and welcoming to visiting fans in LaVell Edwards Stadium. And 2. I've done an away game (at least one) every year since because the experience was so memorable.

I played college football and was recruited by several P4 schools (not including ND). When walking your campus (just a few years after I graduated), I thought, "How could anyone say no after visiting this place." Anyway, I'm looking forward to Saturday. I hope some of you will be treated similarly to how I was in 2012, and I'm excited to come see you again next year.

I wrote something similar a few threads below. The BYU fans visiting were the most repectful fans I have ever met. This was after we had beaten them in a fairly close game. I will never forget how classy they were. They became my second favorite team that day.

Met quite a few BYU fans in 1992

All of them were respectful people, and were quite happy to engage in friendly conversation.

I ran into some of them at a local pancake / waffle restaurant the day after the game, and they were very pleasant people. Seating was sparse, since the place was packed, and they asked me if I wanted to sit with them. I gladly accepted.

I have to admit, they were very well versed in the college football game.

One of them noted that our defense finally found its identity that game in the 2nd half, and if we had a rematch that day, Michigan and Stanford would have been blown out by us.

They were especially impressed with John "Shaft" Covington (played mostly outside linebacker that game) and Demetrius DuBose, since those guys were laying some serious wood on their WR and TE in the 2nd half. Those catches that the receivers were making in 1H became dropped passes after getting hit in 2H.

They were quite surprised that Bobby Taylor was a true freshman.

They also got a laugh out of Rick Mirer's pathetic shanked punt that went for less than 10 yards.

I came away from that breakfast with a positive impression of their fans, and I suspect that if I ran into more of their fans in this day and age, they'd be similar kinds of folks.

They're basically the opposite of what I've seen out of Boston College fans.

Right back at you - I had great interactions with BYU folks last time they were in SB.

Looking forward to a memorable tilt with the Cougars.
