Notre Dame’s defense is top-10 in the country in havoc rate. They have Sunday players at all three levels of their defense. They are first in available yards percentage and second in yards per play during non-garbage time.

They are also 83rd in 3rd down defense. It’s been the Achilles Heel of their defense and was one of the major factors in them losing to BYU. The Cougars were 8 of 12 on 3rd down against Notre Dame.

They are working to correct that horrid stat.

Kind of reminds me of when Rocket Ismail played for Notre Dame

I feel like we've always sort of sucked on 3rd down. On both sides of the ball, outside of the Book

We're not giving enough credit to BYU's coaching staff. They flat out came up with game plans

DadUdaMan41065 posts 3:49 pm on Oct 28, 2026

to nullify our strengths on both sides of the ball. They beat us more than we beat ourselves, even though we had better athletes throughout our roster.

Because they played a lot of zone and they're not proficient at it.

Clem2681 posts 2:35 pm on Oct 28, 2026

There were passing lanes around the LB's all game.
Square peg in round hole defense because they didn't trust the front 7 to contain Bear.

He is up there, but former ND LB Derek Curry might even be a little better-on Goolsby's Patreon show

IMHO, the defensive line hasn’t been as good as advertised.

sweetbobbyg337 posts 2:12 pm on Oct 28, 2026

We don’t pressure the passer.
We don’t stop the run that great.
That 97 yard drive or whatever it was to end the first half of the UNC game was kind of eye opening to me.
They kind of threw over the middle at will. We aren’t stingy. We kind of give it up.
In the olden days 1970-80s, when you tried to run on an ND defense it was a wasted play…no gain.
Would like to get back to a more disruptive, havoc creating DL that plays on their side of the LOS.
That’s just me & my 2 cents.
More attacking less passive.
God bless & Go Irish ☘️
Ps the LBs look slow in coverage, perhaps Talich can switch to LB on third and 5 yards or more?

This is an absurd post, the Dline has been excellent all year.

  Clem2681 posts 2:42 pm on Oct 28, 2026

Dline isn't about stats, it's about players doing their jobs, and ND's Dlinemen have been doing their jobs and then some.
Bryce Young gets a lot of crap because he's not putting up big stats. He's been awesome at doing his job all season. He almost never gets beat or doesn't do his job.
Stats are for people who don't know what they're looking at or looking for. The Dline has been the best, most consistent unit on the team.

    I disagree.
We’ve had one big game, they were deficient in that game.
The big games are won on the LOS. We were beaten that night.
    Been great all year…that’s a fallacy .
I don’t like to name individual players when being critical…I’d prefer to say the DL has been disappointing. It’s not dominant.
You’re entitled to your opinion, but I think it’s a false premise. Hoping we snap out of it against Miami

got the ball out quickly and accurately. What are they supposed to do about that?
They did their job in that game, the back 7 did not.
Blame them if it makes you feel better, but you don't know what you're talking about.

        BYU did.
We got beat up front both sides of the ball. What game were you watching?

BYU - 193.7 rushing yds a game avg. Against ND, 122 yds with a large portion coming on 1 run.

        Clem2681 posts 3:34 pm on Oct 28, 2026

Bear - 45 yds rushing with a long of 6 yds. Yeah, the Dline sucked.
Fact is ND didn't get beat up front on either side of the ball, rewatch the game.
ND failed in play calling and execution by the skill guys (especially QB). The guys in the trenches (on both sides) did their jobs.
If you're going to argue, at least have a clue about what you're talking about, not just "ND lost".

When you win on the LOS on offense you usually out rush the opponent

        sweetbobbyg337 posts 4:14 pm on Oct 28, 2026

And your quarterback has more time in the pocket than the opposing QB.
On defense, you hold their rushing yards to a minimum, hopefully under 100 yards, this achieved by make the holes minuscule & limiting yards after contact.
        You also sack their QB.
I am hopeful we play better and win the LOS in the remaining games.
I disagree with your premise we won the Los at BYU.
        Best wishes Clem.

Another absurd post. BYU, who doesn't suck, was stacking the box and bringing pressure.

Oline can only block so many guys. It's why Walton didn't get a lot of snaps, they were keeping the back and TE's in to not get Carr killed.
But, hey, wouldn't expect you to know that given your previous posts.
Read more, post less, you clearly don't have a clue about what you're talking about.
