True, but back then, deliberately running up the score got you brownie points
Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Phil Fulmer, Steve Spurrier, etc., would all run up the score to try to squeeze out more ranking points, and that certainly left a bad taste to those on the receiving end.
Given how all of those guys had a lot of success, and would mercilessly kick their opponents when those opponents were down, it's understandable that they were despised.
That's one thing about Lou, that he would do his best to not run up the score against hapless opponents. Back in 1989, he actually ordered the 5th string running back (Rusty Setzer) to step out of bounds so that he wouldn't score. Yes, SMU was that bad, fresh off the death penalty.

Odd how B10 & SEC opposed 1rst version Save College Sports Act cuz they didn't want to share TV rev
but then they and their fans condemn ND for wanting to stay independent for the very same reason.
Most of the commentary in the articles actually defends the villains, ND included

Edit: Have to admit to not reading the list in full initially after being informed they actually did put themselves on it. I had only skimmed to see where ND was placed.

If being Independent is so easy, try it. They won't because they can't.
Get your own deals. Have your own TV contract. Scramble to find teams that won't play you. Get shut out of the CFP as a tax for not being a team player like everybody else. Texas, OSU, Michigan, Tide, LSU, try it. Writer intentionally forgot to mention that it was ND students who took to the streets to fight the Klan and he forgot to mention even more where "Fighting Irish" came from. I wonder how the future members of the soon to be created and beloved SEC would have reacted? This is just ESPN being ESPN.
