They just lost too much at once not to take a step back.
I agree that they lost a lot on defense, but they've recruited so well on the defensive side of things, that they'll find a way to put together something similarly good. If they need a game or two for them to reach their potential, they have plenty of cushion, since that offense is going to put up some serious points.
That plus they did very well in the transfer portal, especially getting that pair of defensive linemen from Alabama (Smith, Russaw) and a couple of 5th year starting safeties (Earl Little, Terry Moore).
The "home grown" defensive talent may very well be superior, but if they're not ready to go at full speed, those veterans are going to make life easier.
