To keep things related to ND football, though, I can't think of any Notre Dame football jerseys being retired, and that usually, the former players are tickled pink when some high profile player gets their old numbers.

I remember Joe Montana sending Rick Mirer and Ron Powlus autographed #3 jerseys, with the note of "take care of my number!"
