Why would it go against integrity to allow a student to stay at ND?
I'm sure I'm missing some background info here.

Because he would have to go thru admissions for a grad program. It's not a matter of...
... just staying at ND and continuing with what he was doing. He graduated and would need to be accepted into graduate school, with which, presumably, he hadn't even started the process. It is on the integrity of Notre Dame to be true to their policies, and not make special exceptions for athletes that are not available to other students. It makes me proud of my school that they take this stand.

OK. but why not a second undergraduate degree.
We self impose the graduate degree on our athletes, but we allow non-athletes to graduate in 5 years even for 1 degree. At least we did when I attended.

ND does not allow for this. Two points here...
Notre Dame's undergrad structure focuses on first-time bachelor's degrees. One can earn a double major, or dual- degree. That requires simultaneously earning both degrees. Returning to earn a second bachelor's degree is generally not permitted.
As far as I know, ND does have an engineering and Arts and Letters degree that allows a 5 year curriculum. There may be others that I am not aware of. Regardless, he was not in a program like that. He graduated and therefore was not going to go any further at ND unless he applied for a grad program.

ND did this when I was there. My beef was mostly the comment that it was a matter of "integrity."
Seems like simple policy. ND had a 5 year dual degree engineering and arts & letters major program when I was there...at least, I knew someone who was doing that. I also knew someone who had trouble graduating, and he stayed beyond 4 years to try to finish up. I don't think either case was a breach of integrity, as conor suggests. And, if we allow non-athletes to do it, seems like we should allow athletes to do it as well...and again, that would not seem like a breach of integrity.
But, as you point out, these two approaches may not apply in this particular case.

I was thinking you were missing the point, until your last sentence. It was not about...
...the school losing integrity by allowing someone extra time to finish his/her degree. Whether it be falling behind or changing majors in midstream, I'm sure that there are numerous examples of this at ND. The point is, however, that it does not apply here. JT had finished his undergraduate work and graduated with his bachelor's degree. It wasn't a question of letting him have another year to take more undergraduate classes. He was no longer of a student status that would allow for that. He would have to go through the process of applying for and being admitted into a graduate program. That window to complete that process is, apparently, closed.

A few sources are saying LSU
Although I despise LSU and Kiffen, I hope JT kills it for them. Always enjoyed his aggressive play.
