Running Game & Tight Ends

I was at the game and so couldn't watch the details like I would on TV, but it appeared they went double tight ends a lot. This seems like it was designed to get the running game going, as I think they ran out of the two TE set many times.

And yet, they didn't seem to get a great push. I wonder why. It feels like we had more hats than MSU did...and we knew where the play was going, but there seemed to be no space in the middle of the line. Why aren't we using those tight ends (purportedly great blockers) to seal the edge and get our RBs around the corner?

    ND as Tight End U.

I push ND as Tight End U. every season because of the continuity of great receiving Tight Ends that goes back to Dave Casper. With that pedigree, ND should be recruiting the best TE's every year and working them into the passing game early and often.

The capability upside of Cooper Flanagan and the TE utilization strategy are still not clear to me. I hope Flanagan is positioned by the scheme to step up and he follows through.

I think we're predictable and conservative

Every time we either line up with or motion a tight end into that H Back position we are running the ball, usually stretch zone or whatever.

Maybe it's intentional, maybe we're planning to do other things against the tendency when we need it.

But if I can tell it's a run play from the couch, you can bet the defense knows too.
