As an ND freshman my first game was at Purdue in 1965. ND was ranked #1 and Purdue was #7. Bob Griese went 19 for 22 and led Purdue on a game-winning touchdown drive in the final minutes to pull off a 25-21 win. Notre Dame's QB could not throw the ball over 5 yards. It was a long drive back to South Bend.

In the late 60s, Purdue gave ND fits and were a genuine power. In the age of NIL and the Transfer portal... it ain't ever happening again.

My first game was Purdue at ND, Oct 1, 1960.

Purdue gave the Irish a beatdown 51-19 but to a 7 year old, there was much more to this day than the final score. Old bookstore, campus walk, sharing a steak sandwich with my dad, pictures and autographs after the game outside the Main north gate.
