Is there a better illustration of the talent gap between Notre Dame and USC right now than safety?

Kennedy Urlacher starts for USC and is solid. Yesterday Notre Dame started a third string true freshman because of injuries and he looked awesome.

The gap off the field is even larger but it's insane to me to see just how much the talent level has risen at Notre Dame. There is no logical reason for there to be a talent gap between Notre Dame and USC - USC has almost every advantage under the sun (literally) and yet that program is but a shell of what it was in the early 2000s.

You love to see it.

    When our 2nd string free safety (Luke Talich), who just happens to be a former walk-on, would be starting for almost any other program, and our 3rd string free safety is a true freshman who plays very well, it goes to show that the depth and development is flat-out incredible.

    The last time we had anywhere near this depth at the safety position was in 1992, when Jeff Burris and John Covington were the initial starters, with Bobby Taylor and Brian Magee stepping in seamlessly as true freshmen, along with Shawn Wooden (another draft pick) subbing in as needed.

    As much as USC fans like to bash Clay Helton, he was bringing in excellent defensive back talent on a regular basis.

    On another note, Kennedy Urlacher is playing more of a nickelback position for USC, but sometimes he does slide into help out the FS / SS.

    My son's FIL (generally a good guy) is a USC fan and he was touting that USC "stole" Urlacher from ND.

    I enlightened him to the fact that Urlacher left because he wasn't in the 2 deep.
